EXMOUTH LETS
Cash-free trading for Exmouth
WHAT IS IT?
LETS (Local Exchange Trading Systems) are community-based barter systems. LETS members pool their skills and resources to form a local network which allows them to trade goods and services without using money. Instead of using pounds and pence, each system has its own ‘currency’. Our intention is to revive the Exmouth LETS system and its currency, the Cockle, using a website currently in development.
WHO CAN JOIN?
Anyone can become a member of Exmouth LETS because we all have something to offer - whether it’s goods such as surplus vegetables or home-made soup, a skill such as decorating or chiropody, or a service such as shopping, dog-walking or giving someone a lift. A list of all the goods and services offered by members will be published in an online directory which will be updated regularly. Members will be able to contact each other, update their offers and requests and record transactions via the Exmouth LETS website. There will also be a paper-based system for those without access to the internet.
HOW WILL IT WORK?
Members will earn Cockles by providing goods or services, and spend them on something they want from the Directory. For example, you might earn Cockles by gardening or cooking for someone, and spend them later on decorating or vegetables offered by other members. In other words, you do not have to find a straight swap. A fixed rate of 10 Cockles for an hour’s work ensures that everyone’s time is valued equally, whatever service they are providing.
LETS HELP THE ENVIRONMENT!
Being a member of a LETS system is a smart way of getting things done when you may not have the cash to pay for them, while developing new skills and helping other people in the community. Participating in a LETS system also offers many opportunities to reduce waste and build local resilience. Whether it’s growing food, sharing transport, learning new skills, or reusing and repairing clothes, furniture and appliances, cash-free local trading can make a real difference.
